Reviving “Selman Stermasi”, urban renewal and a modern stadium

The Selman Stermasi Stadium in Tirana, built in the 1950s, has evolved from a sports venue into a vital public space within the city’s urban fabric. Though outdated for professional matches, it remains symbolically significant, offering a rare green, peaceful spot for recreation, events, and social gatherings.
The new redevelopment seeks to transform the stadium into a modern, multifunctional complex that integrates sports, culture, housing, retail, and leisure.
Our proposal includes two main programmatic hubs—the stadium and a public sports field—connected by open green spaces and arcades inspired by Mediterranean urbanism. These arcades provide sheltered, semi-public areas that encourage social interaction and visual accessibility to stadium activities. Designed for year-round use, the project aims to revitalize the surrounding area, foster pedestrian-friendly urbanism, and support continuous community engagement, blending tradition with contemporary urban needs.
